"We all die, the goal isn’t to live forever. The goal is to create something that will"
A Memorial is a ceremony where there is no body. It is very much a ‘Celebration of Life’. Ceremonies can be held at any time that is significant to you for example:
- When strewing (scattering) or interring (burying) the ashes
- On the anniversary of a death
- Your loved one’s Birthday
- To enable family and friends to reflect, if they were unable to attend the funeral
- To include beloved pets in the ceremony
A Memorial is a way of honouring, celebrating and reflecting on the life of your loved one. A meaningful and simple option might be to have the deceased cremated with or without ceremony. Their ashes would then be returned to you for strewing or interment. You, your family, friends and pets can gather at a beautiful location, this can be your home, garden, or other memorable setting, where you can hold a unique and expressive ceremony. Why not create a sacred space to plant a tree. Express your thoughts and feelings through decorating a memory tree. Write and recite poetry or play memorable music. These are just a few rituals that can initiate a beautiful and lasting memory.
I would feel privileged to officiate at your Woodland Burial or Memorial. These can be wonderfully simple, inexpensive and deliver a low carbon footprint. A natural woodland burial is ideal for those who have a love of the countryside. As the body decomposes naturally, it gives back nutrients to the earth, supporting new life to begin. For those left behind, this can be spiritually and emotionally enriching.
